S s remarks about his death After facing so many spiritual and physical struggles in his brief life on arth what joy he must have now that he is in heaven with God and able to behold His glory I am SO GLAD I didn t give up on this book as I almost did I personally found the diary roughly first half rough sledding and might ven recommend skipping it altogether But the second half Was So Good That It so good that it obliterated the struggles I had with the first The account of his work with the Native Americans is amazing and then the accounts of his last few months are so stirring Well worth pushing through I hope to nd as he did all on fire with devotion to Christ Reminded me of the Faber coupletOh that we may die languishing burning and sighing For God s last grace and best is to die all on fireI have never seen a better picture of that than here although many come close CT Studd Hudson Taylor tc the difference is 1 how certainly all knew that he was dying and 2 how well documented his thoughts and attitude during those days is I listened "To This As An Audio "this as an audio It is hard to think of something that could ve been depressing Brainerd is known for having been a weary soul constantly battling the trials of life and suffering periods of melancholy and depression I was amazed that he managed to accomplish anything at all His personal discipline in devotions was an inspiration particularly as he freuently didn t feel close to God His obedience at these times was impressive His humility and recognition of his own sinfulness before a Holy God is something that we should probably all dwell on This was often the reason for his miseryThe book itself was hard to listen to It is as the title suggests a series of diary ntries and not much Vermeer to Eternity else Thentries are all remarkably similar describing how Brainerd was feeling spiritually that day and with brief details of his activities and how he felt about them There is little of his actual work with the Indians it wasn t possible to get a feel for any of the ministrycharacters that he ministered to from his diary This was worth listening to in an age of charismatic Heaven to Betsy emotionalxperiences and people claiming all sorts of things in the name of God In a day when we are told that if we don t feel like worshiping God we should repent and go home Brainerd demonstrated the biblical response which was obedience despite his feelings John 14 vs 15 This was an So B. It encouragement to persevere in the hard times and struggles I would certainly call this book a must read It had been on my TBR list for 15 yearsver since reading a biography of Jonathan Edwards It is not a perfect read in that there is repetition than necessary particularly in the first half of the book The repetition could be Cabaret expected as this is a diary but I believe it would have been better todit some of it out That however is the only problem I had with the book After reading this David Brainerd will forever be a man I love and admire for his passionate commitment to the Lord for his humility his servant s heart and for his deep love for the Native Americans he ministered to for his family for the Church and most of all for his Savior and King Jesus Christ I AM THANKFUL TO HAVE READ am thankful to have read his craving for time alone with God and his continual pleas to the Lord to make him useful to the kingdom and to cause him to live only and always to God s glory David Brainerd has ncouraged me to a higher standard of xcellence to live a life of vision and purpose forgoing all triviality His continual determination to make profitable use of his time to make very hour count for the kingdom of God convicted me of how much time I waste and ncouraged me to change His willingness to Trading Places: The Netherlandish Merchants in Early Modern Venice examine himself to be sure he was in the faith 2 Cor 135 withoutver making En plein coeur excuses for himself or con.
