I ve been a sucker for Nordic Noir literature for so long that when I discovered Viveca Sten s Sandhamn Murders series a year ago I was sooo excited I devoured the first six books in the series and when I saw book 7 on Netgalley I umped at the chance to read it before publication This time we meet Thomas and Nora several years after the end of book 6 and I
that was a success on the part of the author cause we can see how the main characters have evolved and how they manage their new lives Nora s new family and work situation Thomas midlife crisis trying to decide if he still wants to be a policeman Several other authors should take note and do the same to

Their Series So They Don T StallIn series so they don t stallIn instance the story got off to a slow start till the dead body appears at 40% of the book It was interesting reading about the Jonsson family dynamics and how money and a feeling of power can affect you The tension kept building nicely towards the end making it impossible for me to stop readingOnce again the author brings to life a wonderful Swedish setting with a cast of characters you can t help to hold dear Can t wait for the next book in the seriesThanks to Netgalley and Crossing for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review Amazing readI came across this book via Ken one of my Goodread s friends who highly recommended In the shadow of power I liked his review and his thoughts about the bookAs usual in Nordic litterature the novel starts slowly and the author takes all her time to set up the plot The context is introduced and described thouroughly In the shadow of power is brilliantly written full of suspense and wonderful characters I hope there is to come soon from Viveca Sten Set on an island in Sweden the residents are established old hands at island life They are not happy with the newcomers who have built a monstrosity of a house on this island ignoring local rules and regulations There is a feeling of unrest running through the community at the brashness and overpowering aggression of the newcomers but notwithstanding that a house warming party ensures that everyone attends to gawp and look at how the other side livesWhen on the opening day itself a fire breaks out in the guest house adjoining the main house and the charred body of a man is found it is no longer simply a matter of grumbling neighbours The police called in no that the owner Carsten has many enemies he is rude and overbearing even to the police and not co operative at all Unknown to the islanders Carsten is facing his own demons and is facing financial ruinThe story develops slowly but it is very apparent that Carsten is heading for a breakdown mentally and with that he will take his family down as well His wife Celia is not the most loved of people either but the two young children are in danger and the story builds up to a crisis very well The characters are well rounded and believable and the island is described simply and well I always enjoy the Sandhamn Murders books and this one the seventh in the series is no exception As usual it s a well plotted mystery populated with well drawn characters As a veteran reader of the series I also feel that I keep learning and about Sandhamn Island in the Stockholm archipelago I d like to visit someday although there do seem to be a lot of murders there for such a small placeThe story is set in 2013 than four years after the events in In Harm s Way the previous book in the series Sten has shaken things up a little as there have been a few changes in the lives of the main characters Nora Linde has left her bank ob to work as a prosecutor with the Economic Crimes Authority She describes Jonas Sk ld as her partner and they have a daughter Julia Detective Inspector Thomas Andreasson has a new police partner Aram Gorgis because his former partner Margit Grankvist has been promoted Erik Blom has left the police force for the private sector and Thomas. What do the new arrivals on Sandhamn Island have to fear Their own secrets in this gripping novel of suspense by the bestselling author of In the Heat of the Moment The new summer house on Sandhamn Island is an architectural dream for its owner Carsten Jonsson It’s a nightmare for the locals The venture capitalist has flouted local traditions property lines an. Is tempted to follow himThe story involves a move to Sandhamn by a wealthy couple Carsten and Celia Jonsson and their children The couple has built a large spectacular house on the shore at Fryudden which has alienated some of the neighbors who are offended by the Jonssons disregard of longstanding local Sandhamn traditions Soon after they move in Carsten Jonsson decides to hold a big party with some 140 guests to revel in his success show off his house But the
party leads to tragedy when the built guest lodge on leads to tragedy when the newly built guest lodge on property is burned to the ground and an unidentified corpse is found insideThomas and Aram and their team have to figure out what happened An accident Arson Murder Numerous factors make it difficult to untangle the mystery among them Carsten Jonsson s arrogance and lack of cooperation along with reports of threats and harassment against the Jonssons by neighbors Meanwhile Nora senses that there s trouble in the Jonssons marriage and she tries to befriend Celia She is also a resource for Thomas due to both her extensive knowledge of Sandhamn and her legal expertise This is a nice change from the previous couple of books in which Nora seemed to have been shunted off to the side a little bitI thought that this book started out a little slow with a lot of exposition as Sten set the scene and introduced the characters or in the case of the regulars re introduced them and set up the changes in their lives But the pace picked up about a third of the way through and culminated in an exciting adrenalin rush at the climax I was kept guessing about the solution to the mystery almost to the end and I think most other readers will be too Fans have eagerly awaited this next story the seventh in the excellent Sandhamn mystery series Set in the fascinating Stockholm archipelago the charming island and its culture of Sandhamm are the stars of these mysteries involving lawyer Nora and her childhood friend police detective Thomas It s really a perfect match of characters every time The story places Nora and Thomas a few years past the last installment A Swedish expat millionaire is building a summer home on the island for his family but conflicts start up both with his neighbors and his ob His financial investment is now involving Russian speculation and his empire is teetering Sten bri Carsten Jonsson builds a huge showy house on Sandhamm Island using his money and power to ignore local customs and property lines After a party he throws to show off his home a fire is set and a dead body is found that is beyond recognition Detective Inspector Thomas Andreasson with help from his friend attorney Nora Linde must determine if this was deliberate murder or a terrible accident The dynamics in the Jonsson family along with Carsten s reputation for shady business dealings make it difficult to determine suspects and possible motives for the crimeI have read three of the prior books in this series and liked each one After reading the first couple of chapters I uickly became reacuainted with the main characters I came into the middle of the series so I think new readers could pick this book up and enjoy it ust as much Sten is a skilled writer and although clues were given I was surprised when the killer and the motive was ultimately revealed The book opens with a little boy being bullied at school and I tried to figure out the identity of that unknown boy and how it fit in with the rest of the story but I guessed incorrectly Carsten and Celia s story was interesting and heartbreaking and I didn t guess the extent of what Carsten was capable of His business dealings with Russia were also presented in an interesting way that adds to the storyThe best parts of this series are the beautiful setting the individual characters of Thomas and Nora and the close platonic friendship they share They are believable characters as they try their best to succeed in their obs raise their familie. D the natural beauty of the coastline He’s also too wealthy and arrogant to heed the anonymous warnings to leave The threats escalate when his guest lodge is burned to the ground and an unidentifiable corpse is found in the charred ruinsDetective Inspector Thomas Andreasson isn’t sure if it’s murder or a tragic accident Until his friend attorney Nora Linde. .
CHARACTERS ´ THEYUPPYPUPPY.CO.UK ´ Viveca StenS and make a difference in the world It s refreshing that Thomas and Nora get along so well together and make a great investigative team but have their own separate romantic lives Nora has had her ups and downs in the prior books I ve read but things are currently going well for her Thomas is feeling burned out in his ob and is considering making a change The investigation builds and ends with a dramatic and scary scene that had me on the edge of my seat Even though the main plot is resolved by the end of the book both Thomas and Nora have unanswered uestions in their lives While I m waiting for the next book to come out I am going to go back and read some of the earlier books in the series that I missed I recommend this book and the entire series for readers who enjoy Camilla Lackberg or Leena Lehtolainen I received this book from NetGalley through the courtesy of Crossing The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review It s always good news when one of my favorite Nordic Noir authors Viveca Sten has a book translated by Marlaine Delargy into English Nora is back on the island of Sandhamn where a wealthy venture capitalist has built a gigantic house which many of the locals consider an eyesore He decides to throw a
