Simon och ekarnaThis book was a birthday present to my ex from her mother and I picked Learning in the Cloud it up one night after shaking off the dustn lieu of watching the Canucks getting spanked yet again I had never heard of Fredriksson nor did I have much of an expectation for this oddly titled tome but pleasant surprises are always welcome at Chez Sastre This nicely written moving story explores the boyhood "And Adolescence Of A Pair "adolescence of a pair Swedish lads Simon Larsson dark haired and half Jewish abandoned by his natural mother to be raised by his maternal aunt and uncle and Isak a Jew whose moderately wealthy father having fled to Sweden from war ravaged Europe harbors an abundant survivor s guilt that will lash him throughout the novelFredriksson has a deft touch a true warmth for all of her characters and Simon s adoptive parents Karin and Erik an earthy spiritual and compassionate woman and her JOCULAR PRACTICAL AND KIND HEARTED HUSBAND ARE FLESHED OUT practical and kind hearted husband are fleshed out as the tale flows by aging Daniel Webster and Jacksonian Democracy into parents harboring a deep concern for Simon and the way he stands out from his peers for his highly sensitive nature The novel takes a hard edged look at the self awareness andsolation of two swarthy Jews one The Gay Pretender initially unaware of his semitic heritage amidst communities of blue eyed blondes where the sting of Nazism rampant all around and at times within thesolated and neutral nation Bloody Winter is eager to prick those who don t fulfill the nordic moldThis was the first novel I had ever read by a Swedish author and the exposure to the s and customs of this Scandinavian giant was fascinating and revelatoryn and of tself Fredriksson s sophic and tidal character study a slow burn through tumultuous times rewards the reader on several levels I found the blurb set the stage for a certain plot but while the book seemed to start out n that direction Inventaire Sommaire Des Archives Dpartementales Antrieures 1790, Vol. 1: Mayenne (Classic Reprint) it was soon derailed and ended completely differently to what the blurb and first half of the book lead you to expect I found this very disappointing This book showed a lot of promise but didn t seem able to deliver on that The books nteresting and the events n Simon s life keep you turning pages and War Girls in some way feelnvolved n tAgain I m biased due to certain reasons hence the 5 star rating Finally done To be honest I have some mixed feelings about this book There were a few parts I really enjoyed but most of As Lágrimas Amargas de Petra Von Kant it I didn t like I don t think I would ve kept reading thisf I didn t have to It was slow most of the time and I didn t have an urge to keep turning the pages I really love stories about families the dysfunction the normalitiesabnormalities the different ways n which each member of the family normalitiesabnormalities the different ways n which each member of the family The Stalin Front: A Novel of World War II in relation to other members So this book definitely fit that profile I liked thatt didn t take place The Nightmare Garden in America or the United Kingdom because I ve read a lot of stories taking placen those locations This book was like a breath a fresh air and Fredriksson does such a good job with Look to the Mountain imagery thatt was easy for me to magine that I was there with the characters n Sweden I am starting to fall The Space Race: The Journey to the Moon and Beyond in love with the Scandinavian authors Marianne s writings powerful and beautiful I believe the best books are those who touch you at a personal level and that s what Simon and the Oaks did to me I felt a great connect. Ion to Simon and I saw Mayan Strawberries in a Karin someone that I lost a long time ago but was very dear to me Bad Mother No 1 Karin s mother had so many children before she Karin was born so she was an unwanted child and her mother hated her Her father loved her but she was born when her father was old already and he died when she was still very youngBad Mother No 2 Inga was taking care of her old sickly parentsn a house by the lake somewhere Bill Gates (Up Close) in Sweden where all these stories took place starting sometime the second world war In a stream nearby she met a handsome fiddler a German Jew who plays his violin beautifully They couldn t understand each other s language but they knew body language so they made love Several timesn a series of days Near the stream Then he disappeared He later wrote Inga Mistaken Mistress in German a letter he knew she wouldn t understand sot was unread but Inga kept Bunny: A Novel it She discovered she s pregant keptt secret from her parents left their house for a while feigning llness and gave birth She hated the child a boy and gave him to her cousin Erik who at that time was already married to Karin but they were childless when cousin Erik who at that time was already married to Karin but they were childless when the child was just three days oldBad Mother No 3 Erik s mother was a the child was just three days oldBad Mother No 3 Erik s mother was a one and wanted Erik for herself alone though not n a sexual way She openly expressed her dislike for Karin but the latter stood up to her Erik left his mother to live with Karin after they got marriedBad Mother No 4 Inga s unwanted child was named Simon He looked like a Jew Karin knew of the fiddler s letter to Inga and she could have had The Great Smog of India it translated traced his whereabouts so Simon s existence could have at least been made known to his real father Karin however selftishly wanted to keep Simon He grew up handsomentelligent musically nclined but with so many hang ups and weird dreams and visons He had a love hate feeling towards Karin which confused him a lot He would sometimes go to the forest and talk to the oak trees thus this novel s known The Sex of the Angels, the Saints in their Heaven: A Breviary in the 1001 Books list as Simon and the Oaks maybe the English translation ofts original Swedish title Simon och ekarmaBad Mother No 5 Close to the couple were father and son Ruben and Isak They were Jewish When the Nazis were rampaging n Europe with threats to nvade Sweden Erik and Karin took Isak with them for a while and the latter became like a son to them too Isak s mother by that time was already Popular Hits in a mentalnstitution because she was a mean bitch who had gone nsane Apparently she and her eually bad father had abused Isak when he was still a child and when they were still living n Germany Several times while growing up Isak was on the verge of going nsane himself probably because of the genes he nherited from his crazy mother or his unhappy childhood or the Nazis or his experiences with anti semitic Swedes or a combination of all these Bad Mother No 6 When Simon was around 20 he had a girlfriend named Klara a tall The Creative Habit intelligent medical student with a vicious tongue Klara s mother abandoned her when she was still young and ran away with another man She Klara had a cynical view about good mothers and had an ugly exchange of words with Karin when Simon first brought her home as his fiancee Bad Mother No 7 Mona who became Isak s wife described her paternal grandmother. A novel richn mystical overtones his adoptive parents take on truly archetypal dimensions Karin's deep love and compassion The Rest of the Story is matched by Erik's understated strength and stoicism and together they create a firm family base from which 11 year old Simon can grow and dream But Simon who doesn't know the story of his birth and adoption seems set apart from his Scandinavian world by his dark hair and olive complexion and he often retreatsnto fantasies to alleviate. ,
