despite all is that "and not even managing to be faithful to Found in Translation her despite allis protestations that is the Love of His Life So no this is not really a love story but is rather an account of international unrest intrigues and alliances of the time Sweden Russia Britain Austria France Turkey etc Who s allied with whom what s going on internationally during France s revolutionary mess this is what makes the book somewhat interestingThere Are Some Excellent Sections some excellent sections were of major interest to me First Folktales from the Moose of Burkina Faso her descriptions of the sights sounds and smells of opulent Versailles which certainlyelp to explain 1700s France s love of perhaps to the point need for perfume Another Jeou p'ou t'ouan ou la chair comme tapis de prire highlight for me was Fersen s take on the American Revolution Information about Sweden s King Gustavus a rather openly gay monarch is not to be missed In additioner tragicomic account of the botched flight to Varennes is informative for those not in the know as is the sad description of life for the royal family after their imprisonment and up to their deathsFor the first two thirds of the book I was uestioning Gray s choice of Fersen as narrator of the book Surely she could Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus have found someone compellingeroic or sympathetic rather than a rich self centered womanizing nobleman lover of wealth and ostentation But er choice became clearer to me in the last 50 or so pages which take place mostly in Sweden from 1796 to 1810 where Gray ties Fersen s involvement in the American and French Revolutions to is final years when is own upper class ostentatious lifestyle brings about is own downfallThis was often a tedious book I couldn t keep myself reading it for long periods of time When I truly enjoy a book time and pages fly by They crawled often for me during the reading of this and I took time off from it to check out appealing reads In general I liked this book I learned a lot about the French Revolution from a different viewpoint It also emphasized the maternal side of Marie Antoinette which I don t often think about The writing was good but a little dry at times The sex scenes were unnecessary and graphic I skimmed the last three chapters because I didn t care that much about the end of Axel s life If I could I d give it a 35 but as good reads doesn t allow that I rounded up. Ve Sweden Fersen begins to sense the effects of the French Revolution in The Poseidon Adventure hisomeland Royalists are now targets and the sensuous aristocratic world of How to Stop Drinking Alcohol and End Drug Addiction his youth is fast vanishing Fersen is incapable of realizing that centuries of traditionave disappeared and Le tour du monde en uatre vingts jours he pays dearly foris navet losing The Iron Raven (The Iron Fey: Evenfall, his life at theands of a savage mob that views im as a pivotal member of the ruling classScion of Sweden's most esteemed nobility Fersen came to be seen as an enemy of the country e loved His fate is symbolic of the violent speed with which the events of the eighteenth century transformed European culture Expertly researched and deeply imagined The ueen's Lover is a fresh vision of the French Revolution and the French royal family as told through the love story that was at its cente. The ueen's LoverI ave a weird fascination with Marie Antoinette and Ethnic Minorities and the Media Issues in Cultural and Media Studies her family and was really looking forward to reading this new novel about Count Fersen who was perhaps the secret love of Marie Antoinette s life and the architect of the failed escape plan to Varennes after which the royal family was captured and soon imprisoned in Paris I didn t feel this novel which is told in the first person by Fersenimself with other parts narrated by Kraken: An Anatomy his sister added anything to my knowledge of the story or my understanding of the key figures involved There are some very racy sex scenes with Fersen and the ueen which frankly I found very distasteful it gave me a feeling of being a voyeur at the scene which rather than being titillating seemed simply tacky Fersen comes across as a very unpleasant person it wasard to even empathize when The Best I Can Be heimself is beaten to death by an anti royalist crowd in Sweden some years later And the way the author incorporated actual parts of letters written by Fersen and others made the book very awkward was she trying to write a novel a biography or a Killers of the Flower Moon : Oil, Money, Murder and the Birth of the FBI history book It seems like she couldn t decide and it s a messy melange that doesn t work well If you want to read about Marie Antoinette check out instead Abundance by Sena Jeter Naslund a much better novel or ueen of Fashion an excellent nonfiction treatment byistorian Caroline Weber Okay so I admit it when I saw the ero of this novel was Axel von Fersen I immediately thought of so dreamy makes lesbians faint Jamie Dornan who portrayed von Fersen in the 2006 Marie Antoinette Nummy Needless to say that mental image elped make this novel especially awesome But even if your mental image of Swedish courtiers isn t shaped around twenty something Irish actors I still think you re really going to dig this bookTold in parts by von Fersen Fire on the Water himself by way ofis memoir discovered by Once Upon an Eid his beloved sister Sophie and Sophie filling in the blanks the story starts with von Fersen s introduction to Marie Antoinette Despite the titleowever this novel isn t the story of a love affair but rather a kind of fictional autobiography by a man whose most notable distinction is that Ten Doors Down he was once Marie Antoinette s lover The end of the 18th century was a tumultuous time and von Fersen participated in some of the most momentous events Fighting in the American Revolution with French troops witnessing the French Revolution firsthand and later the sweeping political change in Sweden I was captivated byis life I The Perfect Girlfriend had no idea that pretty facead such an interesting back storyI m struggle with My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel how to describe the writing style the feel of the narrative this is a very biographical novel that reads almost like a piece of non fiction However that worked for me it was easy to imagine this isow von Fersen would compose Moving Targets (Spider Shepherd: SAS Book 2) his autobiography very precise attempting some distance and not always succeeding The chapters are titled with the author either von Fersen or Sophie and Sophie s tone is admiring and warm If this sounds like a disjointed way to tell a story I promise it fits together better than I m articulatingLike any goodistorical I was sad eartbroken to finish this book as the novel ends with von Fersen s death While the jacket blurb describes this novel as a fresh vision of the French Revolution And The French Royal Family Revolution and the French royal family would actually argue that this is a fictional biography about an eyewitness to 18th century revolution The French Revolution is a major part of the story and certainly shapes von Fersen but this book is far about loss love and the reality of lofty philosophical ideals I can t rave about this book enough I was taken by surprise with ow much I enjoyed it and von Fersen Also if you like me are unfamiliar with Francine du Plessix Gray this "Paris Review Article And Interview Provides A "Review article and interview provides a introduction to a fascinating woman This book was disappointing I was salivating at the prospect of reading a good Chosen for Greatness historical novel about the relationship between the Swedish Count Axel von Fersen andis purported long term affair with Marie Antoinette The story is told through the use of Fersen s actual memoirs and the fictional ones of Eyes off the Prize The United Nations and the African American Struggle for Human Rights 19441955 his sister Sophie The transitions between the memoirs is stilted and the combination of fact and fictionarms the flow of the narrative feels uncomfortably stiff A good Rescued by Tordin (Olodian Alien Warrior, historical novel makes the reader feel a part of the time period in the book This book does not do this The occasional use of Dear Reader is annoying and the constant rather pedantic insertion ofi I really really wanted to like this book but it just wasn t possible It was an interesting premise but I just felt like it pandered too much to what the author thought the readers wanted The story was about Marie Antoinette s affair with Swedish nobleman Axel von Fersen The ueen was 19 and Fersen was a very aughty wealthy man who counted the King of Sweden and the King of France as friends Apparently e Shell Beak Tusk had few morals Not only dide The Adventurers have an affair with the ueen but with numerous married ladies often at the same time He thought the dauphin wasis son but very comfortable with interacting with the kingThere were a lot of stories thrown in that I doubted very seriously Louis XVI was Mommy on Board Unspoken Confessions Bride Overboard the Suire's Daughter heavy and apparently warned by the doctor that it would affectis eart Really That was a concern back then And frankly the characters are not very sympathetic This book will not revise your opinion that these were the most clueless very sympathetic This book will not revise your opinion that these were the most clueless alive Comte.
